Heaton Hall and Park
Heaton Hall and Park makes the grand claim of being the largest municipal park in Europe. The former estate of the Earls of Wilton, the park has been owned by Manchester City Council since 1902 and represents 25% of the green space in the city.

Heaton consists of 600 acres of beautiful parkland, gardens and pastures and is listed Grade Two on English Heritage's register of historic parks and gardens. The grounds contain ten listed buildings, including the Grade One listed Heaton Hall, a magnificent 18th-century country house, restored with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Make sure you take a look inside the house, if only to see the beautiful Etruscan Room with its delicate patterns and deities by Biagio Rebecca.

Other highlights within the park include the lovely Orangery and a pretty walled garden to the west of the house, maintained by the volunteer Friends of the Park. Children will be drawn to the Farm Centre, which allows hands-on contact with pigs, sheep, goats, Shetland ponies and donkeys, as well as rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks.

The park also houses a popular Tram Museum looking at the development of trams in Manchester, a boating lake, pitch and putt, bowls and fishing, making it the perfect place for a family day out.

Manchester Art Gallery
Manchester Art Gallery's ambitious £35-million expansion and refurbishment scheme means that more visitors than ever before can visit one of the North West's most prestigious art collections. With the gallery area doubled in size, improved visitor services with café, restaurant, shop and information centre, a children's gallery, a gallery about Manchester art and artists, a theatre for decorative arts and an education centre, there is more than enough to last the whole day.

Refurbished from 1998 until May 2002 under architect Sir Michael Hopkins, the venue's striking stone and glass facade blends with the existing buildings to provide a new landmark for the city centre.

The impressive collection spans six centuries of British and continental fine and decorative art. More than 2000 objects are on display at any one time, including oil paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints and a wide selection of craft and design, from ancient Greek pottery to contemporary furniture.

The gallery also presents a changing programme of special exhibitions in two fantastic new galleries on the top floor, and there is a lively programme of other events and activities for adults and families.
